Almost every trade we speak to is on at least one directory, and most of them are quietly unhappy about it. The leads arrive, the fees go out, and it is never quite clear whether the sums work. Here is an honest look at both sides, from a studio that builds the websites but has no reason to pretend directories are useless.
What directories are genuinely good at
They put you in front of people who have never heard of you, on day one, without you doing anything technical. For a trade starting out, or moving into a new area, that is real value. They also carry a kind of borrowed trust, because the customer trusts the platform even before they trust you.
What they actually cost
- The membership, plus a cost per lead in some models.
- Competing on price, because the customer is comparing you with two others on the same screen.
- The customer relationship, which belongs to the platform rather than to you.
- Your reviews, which stay behind when you leave.
- The ceiling: you cannot be the only option on a page you do not own.
What your own site does that a directory cannot
It lets you be found directly for the work you want, in the area you want, without a competitor beside you. It shows your actual jobs, which is how bigger and better work gets won, because the customer spending properly wants to see finished work and not a star rating. And it turns repeat customers and referrals into something you own, since word of mouth still ends with somebody searching your name.
Getting found locally is its own piece of work, and we cover the groundwork on our page for trades and home improvement.
Where the balance should sit
For most trades the sensible answer is both, with the weighting moving over time. Keep the directory while it pays, build the site and the local visibility alongside it, and watch where enquiries come from. As the direct enquiries grow, the directory becomes a top-up rather than the whole pipeline. That is the point at which you can be choosier about the work you take.
The short version. Directories rent you leads and keep the customer. Your own site earns leads and keeps the customer. Use the first while you build the second, and shift the balance as the direct work grows.
