The honest answer is weeks for some things and months for others, and almost never in a straight line. That is unsatisfying, so here is what actually happens and when, which is more useful than a single number.
What moves first
Local searches and long-tail phrases move first, often within a few weeks. These are the searches with less competition: a specific service in a specific town, or a precise question only a few pages answer well. Broad, competitive terms move last, because you are climbing past everyone else who wants them, and that takes months of steady work rather than a single push.
What decides the speed
Four things set the pace more than anything else:
- How established the site is. An older site with some history and links moves faster than one launched last week.
- How competitive your market is. A quiet local niche is quick; a national head term is slow.
- The technical starting point. A site that was hard to crawl or slow gets an early lift once that is fixed.
- How much is actually being done. Steady monthly work compounds; a one-off burst fades.
A realistic few months
Roughly, and every site differs:
- Month one: the foundations. Technical fixes, the pages that were missing, the Business Profile sorted. Little visible movement, a lot of groundwork.
- Months two and three: the first real movement, usually on local and long-tail searches, and more of your pages starting to appear at all.
- Months three to six: progress on the more competitive terms, if the work keeps up and the content is genuinely useful.
If you serve an area, the local wins usually come first and convert best, because someone searching for a service near them is ready to act rather than browsing.
Why it looks like nothing, then jumps
SEO progress tends to arrive in steps. You do the work, nothing visible happens for weeks, then a page moves several positions at once as Google recrawls and reweighs it. The flat stretches are the part people give up on, which is a shame, because they are usually the run-up to the jump rather than proof it is not working.
The short version. Expect small local and long-tail wins within weeks, meaningful movement over three to six months, and progress in steps rather than a smooth line. If someone promises page one in thirty days, that is the promise to be suspicious of.
