Selling food and drink online

Food is the hardest thing to ship and the easiest to get wrong. Here is what makes a food and drink store different, the decisions to make early, and the pages that actually sell.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a big range to sell online?

No. A small, well-photographed range with a clear reason to buy outsells a sprawling catalogue. Range is usually the last thing holding a food business back.

Local delivery or national courier?

Start with whichever your product survives. Chilled and fresh items favour local delivery or collection; ambient and long-life items travel nationally without the packaging costs eating the margin.

How important is packaging?

For anything perishable it is part of the product. A courier can be perfect and the order still arrives ruined, and the customer blames you, not the courier.
