Who owns your website?

Not always who you think. The domain, the code and the content can each sit in a name that is not yours, and you only find out when you try to leave. Here is what to own and how to check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check who owns my domain?

Ask who the registrant is and for access to the registrar account. If your web person cannot give you login access or transfer it to you, the domain is not really yours, whatever the invoice said.

Can I move a site off a proprietary platform?

The content and images, usually yes. The build itself, often not, because it only exists inside that platform. That is the cost of proprietary systems, and it is worth knowing before you commit, not after.

What if my old developer has gone quiet?

It is usually recoverable. Domains can be transferred through the registrar with proof of ownership, and content can be rebuilt from the live site. It is slower and more stressful than owning it from the start.
